"Couple cover charge stamps got her hand looking like a rainbow
In and out of every bar on a whim just like the wind blows
She's either a bachelorette or coming off a breakup
Take a drunk girl home.
She's bouncing like a pinball
Singing every word she never knew
Dancing with her eyes closed like she's the only one in the room
Her hair's a perfect mess, falling out of that dress
Take a drunk girl home."
I was listening to this song when it brought me tears. I have heard this song a time or two and I really find it hard to listen to. Because sometimes, that drunk girl, well she doesn't wake up in the morning feeling good about herself. Sometimes that drunk girl wakes up in the morning with a hangover like none other, regret, sadness, and her soul is shattered.
"Take a drunk girl home
Let her sleep all alone
Leave her keys on the counter, your number by the phone
Pick up her life she threw on the floor
Leave the hall lights on walk out and lock the door
That's how she knows the difference between a boy and man
Take a drunk girl home."
Sometimes that girl goes home with someone she thinks in the moment of bad judgement, ( NEVER HER FAULT, drunk isn't consent, EVER) is a man. She doesn't fully think about what's to come. Sometimes she is purely in the moment. Again drunk, never equals consent.
"You leave her drive for a dive and you get something bad to eat
They're singing "Closing Time" at that bar across the street
In two by twos, strangers and lovers headed for the covers, hooking up
That TV in your two bedroom, sound's turned off
And through the paper-thin walls, you can hear the neighbor’s cigarette cough
There's a million things you could be doing but there's one thing you're sure damn glad you did
Take a drunk girl home
Let her sleep all alone
Leave her keys on the counter, your number by the phone
Pick up her life she threw on the floor
Leave the hall lights on walk out and lock the door
That's how you know the difference between a boy and man
You take a drunk girl home."
Sometimes, she believes in the boy, thinking he is a man. She falls for the false sense of security, because she isn't all there. She closes her eyes because the alcohol has taken affect. Her poor decisions are not up for debate, her decisions should only leave to a hell of a hangover.
"You took a drunk girl home
In the sober light of dawn
She left you a message, she thanked you on the phone
'Cause you picked up her life she threw on the floor
You left the hall lights on walked out and locked the door
That's how she knows the difference between a boy and man
Take a drunk girl home."
Sometimes, she wakes up in the morning and regrets the night before. She carries it along with her for the rest of her life. It takes her years to admit what happened to her that night. Sometimes, you don't get the man, you get the boy. You get the boy who takes drunk as consent. She wakes up somewhere in the night. She wakes up knowing she was violated. She wakes up knowing she was raped. She wakes up and can't change a god damn thing that happened because someone took her power in her moment of weakness.
One day, I woke up and realized, I wish I had gone home with that man. I woke up and realized it was a boy, a wolf in sheep's clothing I had trusted. I would never be the same, and you can't be.
"You take a drunk girl home
Take a drunk girl home."
